Formation

The 46th Division was established in the aftermath of the Burning of Teldrassil. Kasani Nightclaw had already served the Alliance military for years by this point, steadily rising through its ranks and earning a reputation as a disciplined if particularly ruthless soldier. The destruction of Teldrassil changed her priorities completely. With much of the Kaldorei population displaced and Darkshore falling into conflict, Kasani believed conventional Alliance forces alone could not adequately protect what remained of her people's territories. With authorization from King Anduin Wrynn and the support of Kaldorei military leadership, Kasani was permitted to organize the 46th Division. Its original purpose was straightforward:
Enter occupied Kaldorei territory, eliminate hostile forces, recover survivors and reclaim what had been taken.
During the Fourth War
The 46th gained a particularly hostile reputation among Horde forces. Kasani expected little mercy toward enemy combatants discovered operating within Kaldorei lands.
The 46th Today
The end of the Fourth War forced the Division to change.
With open warfare between the Alliance and Horde ending, the 46th could no longer operate as an organization dedicated specifically to hunting Horde soldiers. Instead its purpose shifted toward the protection of Kaldorei territories and Alliance interests. Today, the 46th serves as a specialized rapid-response force. It can be deployed against threats ranging from invading armies and hostile creatures to cultists, demons, undead, Void corruption, and other dangers threatening Alliance or Kaldorei territory. Its soldiers are particularly experienced in:
Forest Warfare | Reconnaissance | Tracking | Ambushes | Search & Rescue | Monster Hunting | Druidic Threats | Guerrilla Warfare | Rapid Response
The Division remains predominantly Kaldorei but accepts members of other Alliance races who prove themselves capable and loyal. Old prejudices remain however. The sight of Horde banners within Kaldorei territory is still enough to put the entire Division on high alert. Kasani herself is particularly reluctant to believe that peace means trust.

Timeline

Year 33 — The Burning of Teldrassil
The Birth of the 46th
Following the Burning of Teldrassil and the beginning of the Fourth War, Commander Kasani Nightclaw pushes for the creation of a specialized Kaldorei fighting force capable of operating independently within contested elven territory. With much of her people displaced and Darkshore under threat, Kasani gathers soldiers, scouts, druids, rangers, and other survivors willing to fight for what remains of their homeland. The Alliance 46th Expeditionary Division, commonly known simply as the 46th or the Moonclaw, is formed. Its original objective is uncompromising: Enter occupied Kaldorei territory. Find survivors. Destroy hostile positions. Drive the Horde out.Year 33 — The War for Darkshore
“We Hunt.”
The 46th receives its baptism by fire throughout Darkshore and the surrounding Kaldorei territories.
Its soldiers specialize in rapid attacks, forest warfare, reconnaissance, sabotage, ambushes, and the hunting of enemy patrols. Rather than behaving as a conventional frontline formation, the 46th uses the forests themselves as cover. This period establishes much of the Division's culture. Soldiers are expected to move quickly, operate independently, and continue fighting even when separated from command. The 46th earns a particularly vicious reputation among Horde soldiers operating within Kaldorei territory. For Kasani, this is not yet an army built to preserve peace. It is an army built to reclaim a home.Year 34 — The End of the Fourth War
An Uncomfortable Peace
The Fourth War comes to an end.
For the 46th, peace creates an unexpected problem: the enemy they were created to fight is no longer officially an enemy. Orders are issued to cease offensive operations against Horde forces, something Kasani accepts with considerably less enthusiasm than Alliance High Command might have preferred.
Rather than dissolving the Division, its mandate is rewritten. The 46th becomes a permanent Kaldorei and Alliance rapid-response force, tasked with protecting vulnerable territories from whatever threatens them. The Horde is no longer its official quarry. Not everyone within the Division finds that distinction easy to accept.
Years 35–36 — The Years of Recovery
“We Protect.”
With the faction war ended, the 46th turns its attention toward rebuilding and protection. Its soldiers patrol Kaldorei territories, escort civilians, hunt dangerous creatures, investigate disappearances, protect settlements, and eliminate lingering threats left behind by previous wars. Training changes with the Division's purpose. Primus recruits are no longer taught simply how to kill Horde soldiers. They are taught tracking, wilderness survival, rescue operations, monster hunting, reconnaissance, independent decision-making, and how to fight supernatural threats. The 46th slowly begins transforming from a wartime formation into the organization Kasani intends to leave behind.Years 37–39 — The Wandering Moonclaw
Expeditionary Operations
The relative peace allows the 46th to operate farther from traditional Kaldorei lands.
Small Cohorts and specialist squads begin accompanying Alliance expeditions, investigating threats to settlements and responding to dangers conventional armies are poorly equipped to pursue. Rangers, Claws, and Moonblades become increasingly important within the Division. This period establishes the 46th's modern doctrine: Speed over weight. Precision over numbers. Initiative over rigid command.
Year 40 — The Dragon Isles
A Wider Azeroth
With the discovery and reopening of the Dragon Isles, elements of the 46th accompany Alliance forces and independent expeditions into the region. The Division's druids and Rangers take particular interest in the strange ecosystems of the Isles, while its combat units gain further experience fighting Primalists and other unconventional enemies. For many soldiers, it reinforces an uncomfortable lesson: The next great threat to the Kaldorei may not come carrying a Horde banner.Year 41 — The War Within
The Shadow Beneath Azeroth
Reports of the Radiant Song, the destruction of Dalaran, and Xal'atath's activities bring the 46th back into active deployment. Kasani commits elements of the Division to Alliance operations while ordering her officers to begin studying Void creatures, cultists, magical corruption, and methods of recognizing compromised terrain and individuals. The Division's previous experience fighting demons, undead, corrupted wildlife, and other supernatural enemies suddenly becomes invaluable. For the first time since its creation, the 46th begins preparing for an enemy that threatens every faction on Azeroth.Midnight — Brothers in Arms, But Not Friends
The arrival of the Void forces the 46th into perhaps its most uncomfortable position yet.
Alliance and Horde forces must fight alongside one another against Xal'atath. Kasani understands the necessity and orders her soldiers to cooperate with Horde forces whenever doing so serves the greater defense of Azeroth. On the battlefield, a Horde soldier fighting the Void beside the 46th will not find a blade suddenly buried in their back. Kasani expects discipline from her soldiers regardless of their personal hatred. They may even save that Horde soldier's life. That does not make them friends.Arguments, distrust, and old grudges remain common. Veterans of Darkshore in particular have difficulty standing beside the same banners they once hunted through the forests. Kasani herself embodies that contradiction more than most. She is capable of recognizing honorable individuals among the Horde—even forming bonds she would once have considered impossible—but this has done little to erase her hatred of the Horde as a faction. The Old Rule Remains
Even during the war against the Void, one rule within the 46th remains unchanged: Kaldorei territory is Kaldorei territory. Fighting alongside Horde forces against Xal'atath does not grant those forces unrestricted access to Ashenvale, Darkshore, Hyjal, Bel'ameth, or other lands under Kaldorei protection. Horde forces entering such territories without authorization are intercepted and ordered to leave. Those who refuse or demonstrate hostile intentions risk being treated as invaders.
The 46th therefore exists in an uncomfortable middle ground.
Beyond their borders: the Horde may be necessary allies.
Upon a shared battlefield: the Horde may be brothers and sisters in arms.
Within protected Kaldorei lands: they are guests only when invited. And those who enter with hostile intentions are still prey.

Military Structure

46th Division — Rank StructureThe 46th follows a military structure inspired by the ancient legions, adapted to suit the mobile and unconventional nature of Kaldorei warfare. While every soldier belongs to the same chain of command, individuals may earn specialist designations such as Moonblade, Claw, or Ranger according to their training and battlefield role.

Standard Enlisted

Primus — Recruit
The newest members of the 46th. A Primus undergoes training in the Division's tactics, traditions, discipline, and expectations before being permitted to serve as a full soldier. Experienced members are expected to guide them and prepare them for the realities of battle.
Auxiliari — Trained Soldier
An Auxiliari has completed their initial training and proven themselves before the Division's instructors. They are considered combat-ready but remain under the guidance of more experienced soldiers until they have demonstrated themselves in active service.
Legionary — Frontline Soldier
The backbone of the 46th. Legionaries make up the majority of its fighting strength and are trusted to operate in everything from conventional battles to patrols, ambushes, reconnaissance missions, and rapid-response deployments.
Standard Bearer — Keeper of the Standard
A trusted Legionary given the honor of carrying the colors of the 46th. Standard Bearers usually remain close to their Centurion or commanding officer, serving as a visible rallying point amid the confusion of battle. Losing the Standard is considered a tremendous dishonor; protecting it is a matter of pride.
Veteran — Honored Soldier
Veterans are experienced members whose years of service, battlefield accomplishments, and loyalty have been formally recognized by their superiors. The title may be granted to Legionaries as well as Moonblades, Claws, Rangers, and other specialists. Veterans are expected to set an example for younger soldiers and are often trusted with greater responsibility.

Non-Commissioned Officers

Monitor — Second of the Squad
The Monitor serves as the Decanus' second-in-command within an eight-person squad. They assist with discipline, organization, and battlefield coordination while learning the responsibilities of command. Should the Decanus become incapacitated, command immediately passes to the Monitor.
Decanus — Squad Commander
A Decanus commands a squad of eight soldiers and serves as the primary field leader for those beneath them. Comparable to a Sergeant, they are responsible for discipline, training, readiness, and the welfare of their squad. Ten Decani and their squads ordinarily answer to a Centurion.
Centurion — Cohort Commander
A Centurion commands a Cohort of approximately eighty soldiers, overseeing its Decani and coordinating their squads as a single fighting force. Centurions are experienced battlefield leaders trusted to interpret orders independently when circumstances change. They report directly to their assigned Legate.

High Command

Sentinel — Special Appointment
Sentinels are highly experienced soldiers personally selected by Kasani or the High Command for duties that fall outside the ordinary chain of command. They may serve as instructors, defenders, advisors, reconnaissance leaders, or temporary field commanders. Their authority comes from their appointment rather than conventional rank, allowing them considerable freedom when fulfilling their assigned purpose.
Warden — Independent Officer
Wardens are trusted officers selected for assignments requiring discretion and independence. They specialize in tracking, pursuit, intelligence gathering, prisoner recovery, infiltration, and the elimination or capture of particularly dangerous targets. Wardens frequently operate behind enemy lines or far beyond the support of the main Division.
Legate — Legion Commander
A Legate commands one of the Division's Legions and the Cohorts assigned to it. They possess considerable operational independence and are expected to conduct campaigns without constant oversight from High Command. Legates are responsible for every soldier beneath their command and report directly to the Vice Commander.
Vice Commander — Second-in-Command
The Vice Commander oversees the coordination of the Division's Legions and assists in planning campaigns, deployments, logistics, and large-scale operations. They serve as the Commander's principal deputy and assume overall command of the 46th whenever the Commander is absent or incapacitated.
Commander — Commander of the 46th
The highest authority within the Division, currently held by Commander Kasani Nightclaw. The Commander determines deployments, approves major operations, appoints senior officers, and represents the 46th before Alliance and Kaldorei leadership. While considerable independence is granted to officers in the field, the Commander's word remains final on all matters concerning the Division.

Specialist Designations

These are not ranks and do not determine authority. Instead, they describe a soldier's primary battlefield specialization.Moonblade — Close-Combat Specialist
Swift and highly trained melee combatants specializing in glaives, swords, and other Kaldorei weapons. Moonblades favor precision and mobility over heavy armor, striking quickly before repositioning.
Claw — Feral & Skirmishing Specialist
The most aggressive hunters of the 46th. Claws specialize in close pursuit, ambushes, flanking maneuvers, and unconventional warfare. The designation is particularly common among Feral Druids, though it is not limited exclusively to them.
Ranger — Reconnaissance & Marksman Specialist
Scouts, trackers, archers, and wilderness specialists who often serve as the eyes and ears of the Division. Rangers may operate ahead of the main force for extended periods, identifying threats and preparing routes for those following behind.
